Rainy-Day Chai: A Warm Cup, a Window and Nowhere to Be

A monsoon ritual for the days when the sky closes in and the best plan is no plan.

Two glass cups of chai, one with milk and one clear, on a tray

There is a particular kind of afternoon, when the sky turns slate-grey and the first drops land on the window, and everything inside you slows down. You are not meant to be productive. You are meant to put the kettle on.

This is a small guide to making the most of that mood.

Set the scene

  • Choose a spot by the window, a doorway or a balcony where you can hear the rain.
  • Gather a blanket, a book or nothing at all.
  • Switch off notifications for half an hour.
  • Keep a small plate of something crisp within reach: roasted chana, mathri, plain biscuits.

The cup

On a rainy day, a milk chai with a little extra ginger feels exactly right. Make it slowly. Listen to the rain and the pan at the same time.

Rain asks nothing of you. A cup of chai asks very little.

What to do with the cup

  • Read a few pages of something you have been saving.
  • Watch the rain run down the glass.
  • Call someone you have not spoken to for a while.
  • Do nothing. Truly nothing.
