Travelling With Your Chai: Train Window, Hill Station and Hotel Room
How to make a good cup of chai anywhere, with a simple travel kit and an easy method that needs no stove.

Some of the best cups of chai happen far from home: a platform in the early morning, a balcony in the hills, a quiet hotel room after a long day. With a little preparation, you can bring your own ritual along.
A small travel kit
- A small resealable pouch or tin of loose chai
- A fine, foldable strainer or a travel infuser
- A heat-proof cup or flask
- A spoon or stirrer
- A small container of sugar or honey if you like it sweet
Keep the pouch sealed and away from damp, strong smells and direct sun, so the aroma stays true.
No stove? No problem
If all you have is a hotel kettle or hot water from a flask, you can still make a good cup. It will be lighter than a pan-simmered chai, but still fragrant.
Make the place part of the ritual
Wherever you are, give the cup a moment. Sit by the window of the train, on the hotel balcony or on a rock in the hills. A new place, an old ritual: it makes the unfamiliar feel a little more like home.
