Meditation, Journaling, Chai: Building a Quiet Corner at Home

How to create a small corner of your home for stillness, and the role a warm cup can play in it.

An open book, a ceramic cup and a plant by a sunlit window

You do not need a separate room for a ritual. A chair by a window, a cushion in a corner or a spot on the balcony is enough. What matters is that, when you sit there, you know what you are there to do.

What your corner needs

  • A comfortable seat. A cushion, a low stool or an armchair.
  • Soft light. Natural light by day and a small lamp in the evening.
  • A little green. A plant, a sprig of tulsi or a vase of leaves.
  • A tray. One cup, a small plate and a notebook.

Three ways to use it

  • Sit. Five minutes of quiet with the cup, breathing slowly.
  • Write. Three lines about how the day feels. No judgement, no editing.
  • Meditate. After your practice, sit for a few more moments and drink a warm cup slowly.

Let it become a habit

Visit the corner at the same time each day, even for a few minutes. Over time, simply sitting there will begin to calm you. It becomes a place your mind recognises.

A quiet corner is a small promise to yourself.
