The Afternoon Pause: A Fifteen-Minute Chai Ritual for a Busy Workday

A short reset between meetings, built around one good cup and a few minutes away from the screen.

A cup of chai, a laptop and a notebook on a sunlit desk

By mid-afternoon, most of us are running on momentum. The morning’s energy has gone, the evening is still far, and the screen has been staring back for hours. This is exactly the time a chai ritual is made for.

Fifteen minutes. One cup. No agenda.

The fifteen-minute pause

  • Minutes 1 to 2. Stand up, leave the desk, and put your phone on silent.
  • Minutes 3 to 7. Make the chai slowly in a pan or kettle. Let the aroma fill the space.
  • Minutes 8 to 13. Sit somewhere that is not your desk. A window, a balcony, a stair. Sip. Look at something far away.
  • Minutes 14 to 15. Notice what you want to do next, and walk back to it with the empty cup.

Why a ritual and not just a break

A coffee run is a task. A ritual is a boundary. By making a small ceremony of the cup, with the same steps and the same cup, you tell yourself that this is time that belongs to you, not to the inbox.

A pause only works if you actually stop.

Make it easy to repeat

  • Keep a pouch and a strainer at the office or in a drawer.
  • Pick one cup that you only use for this.
  • Set a gentle reminder for the same time each day.
  • If you cannot leave your desk, steep the chai in a mug and just sit with it for five minutes.

Jeevras is a fusion of rooibos and Darjeeling black tea with Indian spices and botanicals. It is earthy, aromatic and layered, a good companion for an unhurried afternoon.
